Twyla changed her shirt for the fourth time. The first one had looked too frumpy, the second had a hole in it, the third one showed more cleavage than she wanted it to, and the fourth one was making her itch like crazy.

“That’s all I need,” she mumbled aloud to herself. “Go on a first date broken out in hives...that’s really attractive.”

“Here,” Sissy said, bursting into the room with Ree in tow. “Borrow this one of mine. It’s a little long for me, but it’ll be perfect for you.” She waved a pretty satin blouse at Twyla. “It matches your eyes and covers your boobs, so take it.”

Twyla laughed, then narrowed her eyes. “Have you been listening to my thoughts?”

“Nope, she’s been listening in at your door,” Ree tattled. “You talk to yourself like a crazy person, did you know that?”

“Maybe living with you these past weeks has finally pushed me over the edge,” Twyla retorted.

Ree threw herself on the bed while her sister changed her shirt. “Has Hank said anything about the cat?”

Twyla finished buttoning the blouse. It did look good on her--better than the others, for sure--and responded to her sister’s question. “No, not really. Why?”

Ree shrugged. I went by the shelter for a couple of hours today with Elton--”

“Ooooh, you two are getting thicker than thieves!” Sissy teased her. Ree shot her a red hot glare. “What? It’s not like you don’t tease the heck out of us,” Sissy said defensively.

Ree ignored her sister’s comment. “Anyway, we were feeding the animals and Fluffy was acting all kinds of weird. He kept slinking back in his cage and hissing at me. Shoot, I don’t know what’s wrong with the little guy--maybe he’s got PTSD or something?”

Before Ree had learned that she could communicate with animals, Twyla probably would have rolled her eyes at the suggestion that an animal could have such complicated mental issues. However, it appeared that, in many cases, animals were just like people when it came to things like fear, love, stress, and anger. According to Ree, dogs and cats were particularly human-like with their emotions, though cats were definitely snarkier and less affectionate, in general.

“Maybe he’s just stressed over being at the kennel,” Sissy suggested. She picked up a bottle of perfume from Twyla’s dresser and sniffed it. “Maybe he could be fostered out to a home that’s more like his old one?” She sprayed a little, sniffed again, then passed it to Twyla. “This smells gorgeous--perfect for a first date.”

Ree sighed. “We don’t have fosters at our place. Nobody I know wants to go through the trouble of fostering an animal that they’ll have to give back, so we never set up any fostering programs.”

Sissy frowned. “You really ought to. You might rehome those little guys a lot faster that way.”

“What about bringing him here?” Twyla asked, stepping through a cloud of perfume. “I mean, as long as he isn’t mean to Blossom. Ivey would love it--plus it would let me test the water for getting her a kitty later on.
